Capilano Community Park – June 23 Grand Opening a big hit!

Thank you to all those who came out to help us celebrate the Grand Opening of Phase 2 of Capilano Community Park, including all of our special guests!  The free BBQ was a smash as several hundred hamburgers and hot dogs were served.  Thank you to all our volunteers for helping with running this busy event.  And thanks so much to Heather S for leading our grand opening party.  We don’t know what we would do without you!

The phase 2 project includes a 600m walking path, adult exercise equipment stations, more park benches, a bike bumps course and a community sign.  It is the final phase of a six year project, and completes our vision of creating a “Park for All Ages!”  The first project phase, completed in 2014, included new playground equipment, a spray deck, additional park benches and tables, and a large picnic shelter.  Please visit our beautiful community park this summer and enjoy all the amenities!

Be a Capilano Community Park Helper!

We can keep our park clean and safe with everyone’s help.  Please use the litter bins and encourage others to do so.  Sand on the sidewalk is slippery – if you are feeling ambitious and know that you are going to be hanging out at the park for some time while your children play, then feel free to bring a broom and sweep the sidewalks. It’s great exercise!  Thank you to those who have already been helping to keep our park safe and clean!

Also, it is wonderful to see the spray deck being used on warm days – what a great addition it has been to our Park!  However, please consider refraining from pressing the spray deck “on sensor” if you or your children are not planning on going into the water on a cooler day.  For health reasons (children sometimes drink it), the water flowing out of the spray deck is fresh water (not recycled).  Only press if you’re going in! Thanks!

Community Builder: Alistair “Al” Park (1938 – 2014)

By Gord Smarsh

In 1986, we moved into the Capilano neighbourhood.  This community was founded in 1960 and many of the original owners were still living in their homes.

The first time I met Al Park, he told me that unless we recruited more people to volunteer, the Capilano Community League  would have to fold.  The community was exactly what we wanted, with established schools, great parks and ice rinks.  It was a place where families grow together.  The Community League had some funds, but not enough workers.  Al heard that that a new Bingo hall was going to open in Allendale.  He and Bob Breakenridge (Bingo Bob) went to the first meeting and reported back that we should get in on the ground floor.  Al was a shrewd business man who made good investments with the Community League’s money.

Membership Canvassers needed!

We need volunteers to help sell community league memberships on their block in September

If no one has been canvassing for memberships at your house in a few years, then please consider stepping forward and helping out for a few hours in September.  Not only will you be helping out the community and getting some exercise, but it is a great way to meet the people who live near you.

If you are interested, please contact Shawna at 780-490-1931

Volunteers are what makes this community vibrant!
