Newsflash
Capilano Tennis Club
The Capilano Tennis Club is located next to the Capilano Community League hall at 10810 - 54 Street. The club offers four hard courts, with windscreens and benches, as well as lights and a fully equipped club house. Members are provided with a program of both social and competitive tennis, including activities for junior players, club tournaments, the opportunity to play on interclub teams, morning seniors fun tennis and social activities, including a weekly Club Night drop in. We also host two Tennis Alberta sanctioned open tournaments (for Juniors and for Seniors) each year, as well as a ‘Rogers Rookie Tour' event, providing entry level opportunity for young players to try tournament tennis.

During the summer months (May through August) a qualified tennis instructor (‘pro') is at the courts between 4 PM and 9 PM weeknights and between 2 PM and 9 PM Sundays. In addition to supervising the club program and maintaining the club house, the pro offers clinics and lessons for all ages.

Returning as club pro for 2010 is Calvin Patterson, a top ranked under 18 junior in Alberta from 2006-2008.  He currently attends Northwest Missouri State University and plays on the tennis team there. Calvin has coached well over 100 players between 6 and 13 years.

Capilano Tennis Program Update
  1. Club Night

This event is held every Monday evening (7 PM - 9 PM) from mid May to late August. It is open to all club members, and includes a ‘shot of the week' coaching session, followed by doubles and singles play among all participants. The second Monday each month is designated ‘Margarita Monday'. Margaritas are available in the club house to all participants (18 or older) at a nominal price of $1. Club Night (with or without margaritas!) is a great opportunity for club members to get to know each other, as well as picking up pointers and getting in a few fun games.

  1. Club Tournaments
    1. Wimbledon Wooden Racquet Tournament

This fun tournament is held on the last weekend of the Wimbledon tournament each year. Players are encouraged (but not required) to wear ‘whites', and tournament play (using a single set format) takes place using wooden racquets. The club has a small supply of these racquets, and players are encouraged to dig up those old racquets at home.

    1. Club Year End Tournament and Barbecue

This tournament offers all club members an opportunity to enter in both singles and doubles play against other club members, and is held the last weekend in August. On the Sunday we offer a steak barbecue and provide a year end wrap up from the executive.

    1. National Club Day

Capilano will participate in a National Club Day event, sponsored by Tennis Canada and the Dairy Farmers of Canada on August 14. Our focus will be to offer an ‘open house' opportunity for families to see and experience the club and the fun associated with tennis.

  1. Morning Drop In

The Monday/Wednesday/Friday drop in is a tradition at Capilano. Play is generally doubles. Teams are formed as people arrive, and switch around on the half hour so you get to meet and play with everyone. This event is particularly popular with seniors because of the timing, but is open to all club members. If required, four courts are reserved between 8 AM and 10 AM. Wednesdays when Ladies Interclub is playing, two courts must be made available for interclub after 9 AM.

  1. Interclub

Interclub is competitive doubles play among teams from Edmonton area clubs. There are Men's, Ladies and Mixed leagues at Level 1 and Level 2, as well as Men's Level 1.5. Guidelines for self-assessed level of play are as follows:

Women (Tuesdays PM, Wednesdays AM)

Ladies AM (Minimum 3.5 and up)
Ladies PM 1 (Minimum 4.0 and up)
Ladies PM 2 (Minimum 3.0-4.0)

Men (Wednesdays)

Level 1 (Minimum 4.5 and up)
Level 1.5 (Minimum 4.0-4.5)
Level 2 (Minimum 3.0 - 4.0)

Mixed (Sundays)

Level 1 (Minimum 4.5 and up)
Level 2 (Minimum 3.5 - 4.5)

We reserve two courts at Capilano when one of our teams is the ‘home' team. Weekday evening matches start at 7 PM, but teams usually start warming up at 6:30 PM. The Ladies AM group starts at 9:00 AM Wednesdays, and the Mixed interclub starts at 6:30 PM Sundays.

  1. New To Tennis Clinic

This program provides an introduction to tennis skills, rules and play strategies (free for club members), led by the club Program Coordinator, and is intended for members with limited tennis experience but who would like to develop basic skills and understanding of the game. It is offered Friday evenings at 7 PM or Sunday afternoons at 3 PM for one hour. Participants can of course stay and play after the ‘clinic' is over.

  1. Winner Up

Winner Up, held every Thursday between 7 PM and 8 PM, is an exciting program for players who want a real singles workout. The court closest to the clubhouse is designated as the ‘top court' and the other courts go ‘down' east to west. All four courts may be in use if there are enough players. Everyone starts playing at the same time and each pairing plays up to 10 points. Once one court is finished, those players yell "winner up". At this time, everyone stops. If a player is winning, he/she moves up a court, and if losing, moves down a court. Then a new round begins. Play is very fast paced with few breaks, so it provides a great hour long workout, lots of fun and an opportunity to meet other members with similar skills.

  1. Tennis Alberta Tournaments

Capilano hosts two Tennis Alberta sanctioned open tournaments, a Juniors (under 14 and under 18 groups) tournament in early May and a Seniors tournament in mid-June. These tournaments run from Thursday PM through Sunday, and generally all courts at the club are reserved for the tournament during these hours. Participants must be Tennis Alberta members. This is competitive, good level tennis which is fun to watch even if you're not good enough to compete!

We will also host a Rogers Rookie Tour tournament in July. This is a national program designed to bridge the gap between entry-level tennis and the provincial competitive junior circuit, providing an ‘entry level' opportunity for young players who may wish to play in more competitive tournaments.

  1. Junior Camps and Drop Ins

The Capilano Tennis Club sponsors an After School coaching program in May and June and a Summer Camp coaching program in July and August for young players, between the ages of 5 and 15. This is a great and inexpensive way for youngsters to get started in a game they can play all of their lives, whether they become serious competitive players or simply play recreational tennis.

The after school sessions are offered Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday between 4 PM and 6 PM, split into 5-10 and 11-15 year old groups. These camps are offered Monday to Thursday afternoons. Summer camps run for four days (Monday-Thursday) for an hour each day every week during the summer.

Sign up sheets for juniors coaching programs are available during membership registration, and in the club house. Enquiries should be addressed to the club Tennis Program Coordinator at the courts or by phoning 469-2149 during club house hours.

It is not necessary to purchase a club membership to participate in the After School and Summer camp programs. However, for junior players who are members, the club also offers drop in opportunities for supervised play on Sundays at 11 AM.

  1. Adult Group Lessons

The club Program Coordinator also offers group lessons for adults in May and June. These include a Beginners level program and an Advanced program for players who already have some experience and skills. These lessons are offered to both members and non-members, but members are eligible for a 1/3 discount.

  1. Private and Semi-Private Lessons
Private and Semi-Private lessons (including the use of video) are also available from the Program Coordinator. For these lessons, the specific needs and timing must be negotiated with the Coordinator. Again, members receive
